I recently graduated with a bachelor of arts in English with an emphasis on creative writing and an editing minor from Brigham Young University. I hope to apply my experiences gained during various employment and internship opportunities to an entry-level position with an organization dedicated to significantly contributing to the literary world. With my experience as an English major, editing minor, as well as my passion for literature and reading, I aim to prove myself a valuable asset in this field.
Through my undergraduate program, I have been trained extensively in reading, writing, and editing. I am involved on various social media platforms and have kept up-to-date on current trends in publishing and know that I could excel in this field. My time at university was entirely dedicated to garnering experiences in editing and publishing. I first interned at my university’s writing center where I was trained in writer-editor relationships. I was also a storywork writer for one of the university’s colleges, working with a small team of students to design, research, curate, and edit a new exhibit.
I recently completed a six-month internship with Cedar Fort Publishing. I interned in their fiction department as an editor, working with manuscripts at all stages, from acquisitions to edits, layout, and final proofs. I wrote reader reports and back-cover blurbs as well as other parts of production and marketing materials. My work there allowed me to experience the intensive process of getting a book to print hands-on, giving me invaluable knowledge of the publishing world, including professional and author relationships. With this experience, I was hired on as an assistant to the BYU College of Life Sciences magazine, writing, editing, and designing their Spring 2013 issue. Strong organizational and communicative skills were necessary as I was contacting writers for the issue, organizing deadlines, connecting with editors, etc., ensuring that all parties involved remained efficient. I was the primary editor, completing the final edits at each stage, from substantive to copyediting. There were a lot of things going on at once, and it was an intensive and high-stress job, but I was able to thrive in it. The issue was a major overhaul from their last publication and became their most popular issue to date with over 45,000 in print. My success was rewarded with a promotion to part-time university faculty as an editorial assistant with benefits. Just after graduation, I was hired on as a freelance editor and writer for Flagship Homes, a position where I research, write, and edit text for their blog, website, and various social media accounts.
Even beyond editing, I have held positions as secretary and office assistant, lending me valuable experience in office work, from project tracking to scheduling, filing to customer service. I am comfortable working collaboratively with teams and supervisors but am also capable of working hard independently and in an effective manner. I am eager to be a part of publishing and know that, with my experience and my enthusiasm, I can be a valuable asset to this field.
